Another of those often overlooked orchids, growing mostly in woodlands, often on the edge of rides where it may be surrounded by other dense herbage, grasses and shrubs. Once found, you'll generally find several. These were photographed in Gloucestershire, and give some idea of how variable the flowers are, from very pale, to quite pink, and as they get older, they may be deep pink.

The last two photographs are of the variety, "neerlandica" which may yet prove to be a species, taken at Kenfig where it grows in the open on the dunes, and where there are some 400 plants of this type. In common with many helleborines, they are flowering late this year, and in the third week of August 2007, plants were still to be found in bud.
