This exceedingly attractive orchid was one of the highlights of a short trip to Cumbria and Durham in early July 2007. We managed to find a couple of hours sunshine at Bishop Middleham Quarry, a site famous for holding about 50% of the British population of this plant. There are some 2000 spikes on site, and they were just beginning to open. Not as tall as other helleborine, such as broad leaved, but the deep red colouration makes them very attractive.
