The Essex Skipper is very difficult to tell apart from the Small Skipper unless you can get very close to them. The most reliable indicator is the colour of the tips of the antenna. It was first recorded in this country in 1889 in Essex, and it was thought to be confined to the southeast of England, but today it may be found south of a line from the Humber to the Severn, although it appears to be increasing its range.
