The northern version of the widespread Brown Argus, the Castle Eden Argus (Aricia Artaxerxes subs. salmacis) in these photographs is the English sub-species of this butterfly. The Scottish sub-species (Artaxerxes) has white upperside forewing discoidal spots. The orange dots on the upper wing surfaces are less pronounced than in the Brown Argus. The Castle Eden butterflies were photographed at Bishop Middleham Quarry, in Co. Durham, in early July 2007, and the Scottish subspecies (below) were pictured at St Abbs Head in mid-July 2008.
