These amazing birds have been brought back from the brink of extinction, and are now becoming a frequent sight in many parts of the country, where re-introductions have taken place. However, this pair of birds are generally thought to be from the native stock in their homeland, the Elan Valley, in mid-Wales. These photographs were taken in the valley, not at one of the feeding stations such as Gigrin Farm at Rhyader. This amazing place was the last refuge of these birds and the population in the valley and the surrounds appears to be flourishing. In March 2007 I was fortunate to witness a pair of birds mating. The male brought food to the "plucking rock" and after she had fed, and with no ceremony or courtship, the pairing took place.
