This beautiful little butterfly frequents heathland and sand dunes in the southern half of the country, with strong colonies found on the Surrey Heaths, in the New Forest and on the sand dunes in north Cornwall. Sub-species can be found on the Great Orme in north Wales, and in other localities.
These pictures were shot in Cornwall in mid-June 2009, and the female in the picture below has some quite unusual markings on her upperside, and I can find no pictures of such a specimen in the literature, or on the web, including the Cockayne Database. Any ideas or comments, please email me.
